  • Slowly, she came down the steps of the upstairs floor, dressed in her school uniform, which suited her perfectly. She wore a white long-sleeved shirt and a black skirt that ran from her waist down toward her ankles. The skirt did not completely reach her feet, but since she wore white socks, her legs were still visible. Her shoes were slip-ons, also black. Her hijab was white—not very large—but it still covered her full chest well, masha Allah.

Her hand held a black bag with AYUSHA written on it in Arabic, and beneath it, the name was also written in Hausa. The young girl could not be more than 17 years old, yet she was extremely beautiful, masha Allah. She was fair—not very light, but at a glance you would easily call her fair-skinned. Her body was well-proportioned; you wouldn’t call her slim, nor would you call her fat—she leaned more toward being well-built. She had a fine nose, well-shaped lips, eyes that were large but not overly so, and a moderate height—you wouldn’t call her short, nor tall, just perfectly average. Her teeth were neatly arranged, bright white and well aligned, with a small gap in the middle—what is known as wushirya.

When the young girl realized that coming down slowly would delay her, she began to run so she could get down the steps quickly.

“Mami! Mami! Mami!” That was what she kept shouting, raising her voice slightly.

“Hey, Ma’eeshat! Why are you calling me like a little child? I’m in the kitchen struggling to prepare breakfast. I’ve been hearing you shouting my name again and again. You keep growing older, but not wiser, huh?”

“Hmmm, Mami, please forgive me. I’m in a hurry. Before I even find you in this big house, we’ll already be late. And you know today we have exams early. We also have to stop and pick up Meenal. You know Meenal is slow by nature—maybe we’ll even end up waiting. And you know we studied all night yesterday.”

“That’s exactly why yesterday we quarreled and she ended up spending the night here. If she had slept over, you wouldn’t be wasting time now; you would have just gone straight.”

“I also tried hard with her, Mami. But after everything she went through yesterday, she said she was feeling sick and wanted to go home. You know Meenal is not very strong.”

“Allah Sarki, poor Meenal. No problem then. Hurry up and go pick her. Let me give you your breakfast so you can eat or take it along.”

Ma’eeshat widened her eyes and said, “No, Mami. If I eat now before leaving, I won’t make it in time. I really can’t wait. Just let me buy something to eat.”

With that, Ma’eeshat rushed out. Once she stepped out of the floor, she didn’t stop anywhere until she got to where the driver had parked the car, waiting for her. Quickly, she opened the door and got in. Without wasting time, the driver drove off swiftly, since the gatekeeper had already opened the gate—they all knew Ma’eeshat’s nature: she doesn’t know how to wait and hates delays.

As the driver left the area, he headed straight toward Meenal’s house. Even without Ma’eeshat telling him where they were going, he already knew. They continued the journey in silence; Ma’eeshat, seated at the back, opened her bag and brought out her book to revise. She was not joking at all with these exams—she knew they were the final exams in junior school. If she failed, there would be no WAEC or NECO for her; she would simply be demoted, as that was the school’s policy.

When the driver arrived at Meenal’s house, even though Ma’eeshat was deep in her studies, she still noticed the car stopping—an obvious sign that they had arrived. Quickly, she put her book back into her bag and hurriedly tried to open the car door to get out.

The neighborhood was not a rich area—it was a ghetto. You could still find people living decently, but the poor were far more numerous.

Ma’eeshat hurried toward a moderately sized house. The house wasn’t very big, and there was nothing modern about it; there was no gate, just plain plaster at the entrance.

As Ma’eeshat was about to reach the door, she saw Meenal coming out, her face filled with brightness and joy. She was wearing the exact same uniform as Ma’eeshat—everything identical, even the shoes and the bag.

Meenal was neither very dark nor fair, but you could clearly tell she wasn’t fair-skinned. She was dark, though not jet black—rather, someone you’d say wasn’t fair, maybe with a chocolate complexion. Her skin was beautiful and even had a glowing look. She had applied light makeup; her eyes were clear, bright, and beautiful—not very big, just moderate. Her nose was also moderate. Her face wasn’t slim; it was slightly broad. She was well-built too, even a bit fuller than Ma’eeshat, though in reality it wasn’t fatness, just a solid, healthy build. Her forehead was smooth and wide, her cheeks dimpled deeply, and her dimples appeared clearly whenever she moved her lips.
