  • A well-built young man of about 35 years stepped out, placing his walking stick at the gate of their house. He stretched out his legs, spotless white as if they had touched blood, and came out. He began to walk with firm, measured steps toward the path that led to the small extension of their house. Walking with the steady stride of senior soldiers, he greeted at the entrance of the sitting room.

From inside the sitting room, his greeting was answered. An elderly man of about 60 was seated there with his three wives. All of them turned toward him with smiles on their faces—except one of the wives, who frowned and tightened her face. He approached with a broad smile, sat down, and said, “Well done for resting.”

They all responded. He said, “Abba, how was your day?” He replied, “Fine.” “Father, where did you come from?” “I went to my father’s house.” “That’s good. How did you meet them?” “Fine and well.” “They send their greetings.” He said, “We accept.”

Just then, a handsome little boy came running and threw himself into his arms, saying, “Abba Faruk, look, Mommy wants to beat me, right?” He hugged him and asked, “What did you do to her?” The boy replied, “She said I disturbed her with too much talking.”

Faruk immediately spoke up, saying it’s with the mouth one speaks—how can someone be forbidden from talking? Hajiya Safiyya said, “Leave it; this our husband doesn’t even listen.” Hajiya Aisha, whom they call Mommy, said, “Just forget him, for God’s sake. He won’t understand anything except roaming around different countries—what does he even know?”

Faruk didn’t even listen to them. He went on scolding the boy lightly and said, “My son, calm yourself. I won’t allow her to beat you. Come, let’s go to my room—you won’t return to that room again for her to say you disturbed her.”

The boy said, “Abba Faruk, if Daddy comes back and doesn’t see me, he’ll flog me.” “Who is your daddy?” Faruk said. “If he ever touches you and I see it, I’ll beat him.” The boy widened his eyes and said, “You can beat him?” Faruk replied, “Very well.” The boy burst into laughter and said, “If he beats me, I’ll call you then.” “Yes, my son, so you’ve understood. Good. Now get up, let’s go.”

They stood up, he carried the boy and headed to Faruk’s room. Meanwhile, Hajiya Safiyya and Anty Amarya were chatting about how close Faruk was to the boy. As for Hajiya Aisha—Mommy—she did nothing but glare at Faruk, until Alhaji noticed and said, “Aisha, are you alright?”

“I’m fine, Alhaji. What do you see?” He said, “Well, what I want you to understand is: reduce showing that kind of behavior toward the boy—stop pulling him harshly. Hold him close to yourself.”

She stood up and said, “Alhaji, is he a small baby that I should be carrying him? Should I carry him on my back or what? This child is already grown—from age three to four.”

She went into the room, leaving Alhaji saying, “May Allah guide you, Aisha,” while the other wives burst into laughter.
